Regular dental visits prevents dental tartar from building up and forming under the gum line. If this build up occurs, and is left untreated, it eventually can lead to periodontal disease, which left untreated, may cause tooth loss. Advanced stages of gum disease may allow bacteria from the mouth to enter the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body. Studies have shown that gum disease has actually been linked to heart disease and stroke!
*We offer basic cleanings called dental prophylaxis, dental debridement, and periodontal scale and root planning.
*Dental prophylaxis is used to treat the early stages of gum disease. Special tools are used to remove dental tartar, which you can’t do on your own.
*Dental Debridement is prescribed by your dentist if your teeth have extensive plaque or tartar buildup. After the removal of the tartar, a dental prophylaxis is recommended at a future appointment.
*Scaling and root planing is a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. Scaling and root planing is often followed by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery antimicrobials and host modulation, as needed on a case-by-case basis.
